Car Shipping Insurance Explained

How carrier cargo insurance works, what it covers, what it excludes and whether your personal policy fills the gaps.

In this guide

  1. Carrier cargo coverage is mandatory
  2. What is genuinely excluded
  3. Your own policy usually still applies
  4. High-value vehicles

Carrier cargo coverage is mandatory

Every carrier we dispatch to must carry active cargo insurance, typically $100,000 to $250,000 per load for open carriers and up to $1 million or more for enclosed. We verify certificates before a truck is assigned.

What is genuinely excluded

Acts of God such as hail and flooding are commonly excluded on open transport. So is damage to personal items left inside, pre-existing mechanical failure, and wear items. Read the exclusions rather than assuming.

Your own policy usually still applies

Most comprehensive auto policies continue to cover your vehicle in transit. Call your agent, confirm it in writing, and you have a second layer of protection at no extra cost.

High-value vehicles

For vehicles above roughly $150,000, ask for a certificate naming the specific coverage limit for your load. Agreed-value collector policies should be reviewed before booking.
