Shipping a Non-Running Vehicle

What inoperable vehicle transport requires, what it costs extra and how winch-equipped carriers load a car that will not start.

In this guide

  1. Define 'non-running' accurately
  2. Winch, forklift or lift gate
  3. Expected extra cost
  4. Preparing an inop vehicle

Define 'non-running' accurately

Carriers need to know exactly what works. A car that starts but will not shift is different from one with no engine at all. Rolling, steering and braking are the three functions that determine which equipment can take it.

Winch, forklift or lift gate

Most inop vehicles load with a winch, which requires the car to roll and steer. If wheels are locked or missing, a forklift or a lift-gate enclosed trailer is required, and the price rises accordingly.

Expected extra cost

Budget an additional $150 to $250 for winch service on an open carrier. Vehicles that cannot roll at all can add $400 or more because far fewer trucks can handle them.

Preparing an inop vehicle

Air up the tires if possible, make sure the steering is unlocked, provide a key even if the engine is dead, and clear a straight, flat path for the winch cable.
